June Guild News

We just have a couple of quick announcements for our virtual/at home events that are happening this month:

Virtual Retreat – Since our usual June retreat at Vina de Lestonnac has been cancelled for this weekend, we thought we’d have a virtual Zoom retreat instead. The Zoom link has been emailed out earlier this week from Jill to guild members. We will be virtually retreating on Saturday, June 6th from 10am-4pm. Feel free to join us the whole time, for an hour, or pop in and out as necessary.

We will be having a few events throughout the day as well as some raffles.

  • Ongoing throughout the day will be our current charity group quilt project for Just In Time: My First Home Project. More details about those blocks can be found here: JIT Improv Triangles
  • At 10:30, Sue will be demonstrating her Make It/Take It project – Origami Take Along Bag. Instructions as well as a supply list have been emailed out to guild members.
  • At noon, Julie Herman of Jaybird Quilts will be joining us to talk about her new block of the month quilt – Nebula. The link goes to her Instagram page where you can see more of this quilt!

If you didn’t receive that email, please check your spam/junk/promotions in case it got sent somewhere else first and then email Jill to touch base if you still did not receive it.

June Zoom Meeting – We will be having our regularly scheduled June meeting at 11:00am on Sunday, June 14th virtually on Zoom. An email to members will go out within the next couple of days with a link to the meeting. We will be having our usual virtual Show and Tell and instructions on how to submit your photos will be forthcoming as well.

Stitching Together QAL – Sue has put together a weekly QAL that anyone can join in on at any point. Week 3 of 5 has been posted this week and you can check out all the QAL posts here: Stitching Together QAL

The QAL will be covering these different topics:

  • English Paper Piecing (EPP)
  • Organic Machine Quilting with a Walking Foot
  • Big Stitch Hand Quilting
  • Hand Applique
  • Bias Binding

Opportunity Quilt – The board has decided that we would like to collect money as a guild to donate to the San Diego Food Bank. The Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank and North County Food Bank Chapter are currently providing food assistance and resources to 350,000 of our neighbors!   To encourage even more charitable giving, we will be giving one lucky donor our QuiltCon 2019 charity quilt (the miniature piecing!)  For every $10 donation you make through our guild your name will be entered in a drawing.  Of course, no donation is necessary to win.  If you would like to be entered in to the drawing without making a donation please email [email protected].  You can Venmo your donation to @sdmodernquiltguild (and note that it is a donation for the Food Bank) or send a check made payable to “San Diego Modern Quilt Guild”. Information about how to mail in your check was included in the Retreat Zoom email or email Jill to get that information.

Just In Time (JIT) Group Charity Blocks – Improv Triangles

Our charity program year is broken up into trimester projects and as we’re currently into the second trimester of the year, it’s time to present our JIT My First Home group project.

We typically provide fabric and kits for members to take, sew up, and return to our Charity Coordinator Kristyn, but seeing as we’re all sewing at home for the time being, we’re asking for this group project that you use fabric from your stash for these blocks. If you are in need of fabric in this color palette, please email Kristyn at [email protected] to make arrangements.

A little about the JIT My First Home Project:

JIT is an organization that helps support those in San Diego County, ages 18 – 26, and is for anyone that has ever spent time in the foster care system. They provide various services to these individuals to help them break the cycle of foster care, become self-sufficient, and build a secure future.

We support the My First Home project, which helps to set up a first apartment and furnish that apartment for each individual. Our focus for this trimester is on throw and bed sized quilts. Quilts should be 50″ x 60″ or larger.

Our block for this trimester is an Improv Triangle block. You can create these blocks using various methods, but here’s a quick and easy way that makes two blocks at once.

First, here’s our color palette of blues, aqua/teal, greens, and yellows with light greys and low volume. Feel free to use any type of fabrics, solids or prints, as long as they fit in within this color range.

Blues, aqua/teals, greens, yellows
Light greys and low volume

Next, you’ll want to cut two pieces of fabric that are the same size and layer them on top of one another. The two pieces can be any two colors from the color palette.

These pieces can be a square or rectangular, just make sure they’re the same size. They can be any size you’d like to make – want to make large 12″ blocks or small 4″ blocks, go for it! The triangle you cut from the fabric can also be any size – make it tall and narrow, or short and wide, or anything in between.

Once you have your two pieces layered, you’ll be making two angled cuts on your fabric. The first should be cut from top to bottom on one side, then slide that to the side so that you don’t cut into those pieces with your second cut. Make the second cut on the opposite side so that you have the other side of your triangle.

Swap your center triangle on each block so that you have the background in one fabric and the triangle of the second.

Sew up your block using a 1/4″ seam, press your seams to the side, and then trim any bits that over hang the edges. (For reference, these blocks are approximately 5.5″x6.5″)

We’ll be sewing these blocks through August, which is the end of our trimester. When you’ve completed your blocks, please email Kristyn at [email protected] to make arrangements for either pick up or to mail them to her. Any other questions about this project or any of our other charity efforts can also be emailed to Kristyn.

Meeting

April Guild Updates

Hi everyone! Hope this update finds you all healthy and sewing if you’re able to do so! Things are constantly changing, as I’m sure you’re well aware, so here’s a few updates from the guild:

  • The April meeting is cancelled. We really wish we could meet up, but as Social Distancing/Shelter in Place is in effect, we can’t make that happen. Quilt in a Day has also cancelled all of their classroom events through April 17th (as of 3/29/2020), so that also effects the decisions we’re making.
  • We may not be able to meet in person this month, but member Carolina Moore has offered to host a virtual meeting on her YouTube page on Sunday, April 5th at 11:00am – so, we will still be able to “meet” at the same time. Here’s the info from her post on the SDMQG Facebook group:

I’ll do a little intro, maybe a demo (let me know if you have any requests) and then my favorite part of the meeting … show and tell!! Which is where you come in! Can you send me pictures of your quilts/bags/projects that you would have shared at the meeting? Include your name, your Instagram handle if you have one, website if you have one of those, and any details about the quilt … the pattern you used, the fabric, and the story behind it. I’ll share all of that during the live so we can all continue to be inspired by this amazing group! Email them by Saturday April 4th at noon (need to make sure I have myself all organized) to [email protected] with “San Diego MQG” in the subject line, please. Oh – and you’ll be able to join along! You will all be able chat with each other in the comments section during the live!! So it will be *almost* like a real meeting!

Here’s the link to her YouTube page: https://www.youtube.com/user/CraftMoore

If we receive a specific link to the YouTube live stream, it will be posted here, otherwise there should be a stream up on that page at 11:00am this coming Sunday.

  • We had also planned for a charity sew-in on Saturday, April 18th, but we will be rescheduling that for later in the year. Instead, we will be having a virtual charity sewing day instead. We will have a post up here and on our Instagram page as well with some more info once we get a bit closer to the 18th.
  • Progressive Swap – If you’re in the swap, hang onto the boxes you have and we will swap them at the June meeting (as we don’t have a May meeting)
  • If you’re on Facebook and in the SDMQG group, we’ve been having some fun discussions about quilts and quilting, so be sure to check those out!

Sew In and Workshop Updates

For the safety and health of everyone during this time and to limit the spread of the Coronavirus, we have decided to cancel the sew-ins scheduled for the rest of this month.

We have also decided to postpone the Scaling Your Sampler workshop with Colleen Molen scheduled for next Saturday to a later date to be determined. We will let you know once a new date has been finalized.

At this moment, we are deciding whether or not to have our April meeting on Sunday, April 5th. We’ll see how things are progressing and update you with a decision once we get closer to that point.

Scaling Your Sampler Workshop

For the health and safety of everyone and to limit the spread of the Coronavirus, we have decided to postpone this workshop to a later date. We are still working on scheduling this new date, but will post an update once we sort that out.

Member Colleen Molen will be presenting a workshop called “Scaling Your Sampler” on Saturday, March 21st at Quilt in a Day from 9:30am-3:30pm.

This workshop is a little bit of improv, a little bit of color theory, and a little bit of quilt math (but not enough math to be scary).

In this workshop, you will take a sampling of 12” blocks and learn to add interest to your sampler quilt by scaling your blocks up and down in size. You will then learn to set them improvisationally and take your sampler to the next level.

This workshop is $25 for members and is limited to 24 spots. Lunch is not included in the price of the workshop, so please plan to bring your own.

If more than 24 people sign up for the class, a waitlist will open up. Payment and form must be received in order to hold your space in the class. Fee is non-refundable, unless your spot can be filled from the waitlist. You must be a current member of SDMQG to sign up – if space allows, we may open the workshop to non-members.

Registration for this workshop is now open. If you’re interested in signing up for this workshop, please follow these steps:

  1. Fill out the workshop registration form.
  2. Pay the $25 workshop fee.
