Our current charity drive is for the Riverside Chemo Lounge. We are accepting donations of lap sized quilts.

Our group quilt project for this trimester are these Starlite Blocks:

We still have a few block kits left and if you’re interested in sewing up a block, please email Kristyn at [email protected] with your address and we’ll get a kit mailed off to you. Blocks for this project are due back the week of November 8th.

QuiltCon: We’ve received a lot of our blocks back for this quilt and are excited to start arranging and putting it together. As a reminder, any outstanding QuiltCon quilt blocks are due back to Kristyn no later than October 16th.

Upcoming Events:

Tara Faughnan Webinar: We are excited to be hosting Tara Faughnan for a webinar titled “Color and Design” on Saturday, November 7th at 11:00am PST. This webinar will be open to everyone. The webinar will be free for members and $10 for guests. Registration will open on Tuesday, October 6th.

Drawing on 20 years of experience in quilting and textile design, I will share some of my approaches to the creative process, and discuss the importance of value, proportion and color when designing a quilt.

For more information about Tara, check out her website or her Instagram page @tarafaughnan.

Holiday Party and Mini Quilt Swap:

We have tentatively scheduled our annual holiday party (pandemic version) for Sunday, December 6th at 11:00am at the Alta Vista Botanical Gardens in Vista.

It will be a potluck and we will have a sign up sheet closer to the party.  A rousing game of left-right-center is planned along with our mini swap.

The party will be held outside – weather permitting.  If the weather is inclement we will need to postpone the party.

August Guild Updates/News

We have a lot of exciting things happening with the guild in the next few months, so read on to find out what we have planned!

Elections:

Elections for the 2021 guild board are coming up in October. We will be taking nominations at our September meeting that will be voted on in October. All of the current board members have termed out in their positions, so all of the board positions are currently open and available.

If you are interested in being on the board or would just like to find out more about the board positions and what each entails, email Jill or the board at [email protected]. We are planning to have a zoom meeting before the next meeting with the current board to talk with those interested in becoming a board member.

Jacquie Gering Workshop

We are excited to be hosting a Zoom workshop with Jacquie Gering on Saturday, October 10th from 1-4pm. She will be presenting a workshop on Improv Shape Studies –

Image provided by Jacquie Gering

In this class students will learn the free piecing improvisational technique
from Quilting Modern as well as strategies to create effective
compositions.  Students will learn and utilize several techniques including
skinny line piecing, improvisational curves, angle piecing, paneling and
creating and assembling building blocks. Students will create several small
improvisational studies that can be framed or used as seeds for larger
compositions and quilts.

There are 25 spaces available for this workshop and the cost is $35. Spaces will be filled by lottery and payment can be made once you are notified that you are in the workshop. We will start a wait list, if needed, from those that do not gain entry into the workshop via the lottery. As per our workshop policy, you must register and send in payment (once requested) to fully be enrolled in the class.

Signups for this workshop will be posted here on the blog and will be open to SDMQG members for one week starting on Thursday, August 13th at noon and will close the following Thursday evening. If spots don’t fully fill in that week, then we will fill the workshop on a rolling basis.

QuiltCon Community Outreach (Charity) Challenge Quilt:

The theme this year is curves and the quilt palette is made up of oranges and blues. We have chosen the following palette for our group quilt:

The quilt plan was announced at the August meeting and a full blog post about the quilt project will be coming shortly. Look for those details to be posted soon.

Word Challenge:

We challenged members to use black and white plus one color fabrics to make up a quilt for out August meeting. Our challenge for the September meeting is to make a word quilt – you can piece a word or words onto a quilt top, use text fabric, or use that text fabric to create your words. There are no restrictions on size or type of fabric you use. We’re looking forward to seeing what you come up with!

Upcoming Zoom Sew-in and Meetings:

Our next Zoom sew-in will be on Sunday, August 23rd from 11-1.

The September guild meeting will be held on Sunday, September 13th at 11:00am on Zoom.

Members, you will receive Zoom links in your email to those a few days before the scheduled event.

June Guild News

We just have a couple of quick announcements for our virtual/at home events that are happening this month:

Virtual Retreat – Since our usual June retreat at Vina de Lestonnac has been cancelled for this weekend, we thought we’d have a virtual Zoom retreat instead. The Zoom link has been emailed out earlier this week from Jill to guild members. We will be virtually retreating on Saturday, June 6th from 10am-4pm. Feel free to join us the whole time, for an hour, or pop in and out as necessary.

We will be having a few events throughout the day as well as some raffles.

  • Ongoing throughout the day will be our current charity group quilt project for Just In Time: My First Home Project. More details about those blocks can be found here: JIT Improv Triangles
  • At 10:30, Sue will be demonstrating her Make It/Take It project – Origami Take Along Bag. Instructions as well as a supply list have been emailed out to guild members.
  • At noon, Julie Herman of Jaybird Quilts will be joining us to talk about her new block of the month quilt – Nebula. The link goes to her Instagram page where you can see more of this quilt!

If you didn’t receive that email, please check your spam/junk/promotions in case it got sent somewhere else first and then email Jill to touch base if you still did not receive it.

June Zoom Meeting – We will be having our regularly scheduled June meeting at 11:00am on Sunday, June 14th virtually on Zoom. An email to members will go out within the next couple of days with a link to the meeting. We will be having our usual virtual Show and Tell and instructions on how to submit your photos will be forthcoming as well.

Stitching Together QAL – Sue has put together a weekly QAL that anyone can join in on at any point. Week 3 of 5 has been posted this week and you can check out all the QAL posts here: Stitching Together QAL

The QAL will be covering these different topics:

  • English Paper Piecing (EPP)
  • Organic Machine Quilting with a Walking Foot
  • Big Stitch Hand Quilting
  • Hand Applique
  • Bias Binding

Opportunity Quilt – The board has decided that we would like to collect money as a guild to donate to the San Diego Food Bank. The Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank and North County Food Bank Chapter are currently providing food assistance and resources to 350,000 of our neighbors!   To encourage even more charitable giving, we will be giving one lucky donor our QuiltCon 2019 charity quilt (the miniature piecing!)  For every $10 donation you make through our guild your name will be entered in a drawing.  Of course, no donation is necessary to win.  If you would like to be entered in to the drawing without making a donation please email [email protected].  You can Venmo your donation to @sdmodernquiltguild (and note that it is a donation for the Food Bank) or send a check made payable to “San Diego Modern Quilt Guild”. Information about how to mail in your check was included in the Retreat Zoom email or email Jill to get that information.

Blog subscribers

Hi all! Happy New Year! Our apologies about the blog subscription not sending out emails for the past many months. There was a bug that was preventing the notification emails from being sent out. I think that we’ve solved it. You should have received a notification on January 2, 2020 about this post, and also about Kristyn’s newsletter post. If you didn’t, try checking your spam folders, or resubscribing using the form in the top right corner of the blog. (You have to do this on a computer and not a phone or tablet).

Thanks so much for being patient. The Interwebz sometimes elude me 🙂

December Newsletter

Our December newsletter is now available. It’s short and sweet this month, as we prepare for the holiday season and the upcoming year!

Just as a reminder, we will not be having our usual guild meeting on Sunday, December 8th at Quilt in a Day, as we are having our holiday party off site. Members should have received an invite to the party – if you haven’t, please check your spam folder as it may have gone there or email the board and we can follow up for you.

Our usual sew-ins will be happening this month as well – some dates/times need to be added as we get it from the particular location, but all are still happening.
