Save the Selvages Workshop

Sandy Thompson will be teaching a Save the Selvages workshop on Saturday, May 18th from 9:30 – 2:30 at Quilt in a Day.

The cost of the class is $25 and is limited to 20 spots. Lunch is not included in the price, so please plan to bring your own. You must be a current guild member to sign up for this workshop. If more than 20 people sign up for the class, a waitlist will open up. Payment and form must be received in order to hold your space in the class. Fee is non-refundable, unless your spot can be filled from the waitlist.

Sign up for the workshop by following this link: Save the Selvage Registration.

Here’s the class description from Sandy:

In this class you will learn how to make Selvage Foundations, which are the base for all selvage projects. You will see how much fun it is to make projects with these foundations.

I will be giving you three patterns: Luggage Tag, Chicken Pincushion and Sewing Machine Mat. The Luggage Tag and the Chicken Pincushion are a great way to learn how to build foundations with your selvages. I will have the supplies for these for these two projects in class.

You may purchase my book “Save the Selvages” in class for $20. If you wish to make one of the sixteen projects in the book, I suggest you purchase the book before class. The supply lists for these projects are in the book.

sew in

North Central County Sew Ins

We have secured space at the North University Community Library (805 & Nobel) on three upcoming Saturdays for sew-ins!

The sew-ins will take place from 9:30am – 1:30pm. We have the space booked for the following Saturdays:

  • March 23rd
  • April 20th
  • May 18th

Tables, chairs, and power outlets are provided by the library, but we will need to bring extension cords along with any other sewing equipment that each person wants to bring to the sew-in. There is also a refrigerator available for our use to keep food or drinks cold while we are there.

Parking: It was recommended to us by the library to park behind the building while we are there for the sew-in, as the parking in the front of the building has a 2-hour time limit.

All members and non-members are welcome to join us for this sew-in!

Garment Sewing… What’s That All About?

Ever thought about garment sewing? Ever wonder what all those different types of fabrics are about or why a pattern designer recommends certain fabrics for a pattern? Rayon? Lawn? Double Gauze?

We’ll be holding Garment 101 after our February meeting on to talk about garment sewing and how to dip your feet into that area of sewing. We’ll be discussing different types of fabric, tools, and general information about garment sewing.

If you’re signed up or thinking about signing up for the Scout Tee class in March, this is the perfect introduction to some of the things we will be covering in that class.

Scout Tee Class

We will be having a Scout Tee class, led by guild member Kristyn Jansen on Saturday, March 16, 2019. The class will be held at Quilt in a Day from 9:30am-3:30pm. The cost of this class is $25 and lunch is not included.

The Scout is a woven t-shirt with capped sleeves and scoop neck. Fitted at the shoulders, this top falls into a loose shape below the bust.

This class will teach you foundational elements of garment sewing such as reading a garment pattern and selecting the correct size, setting in a sleeve, hemming, and bias binding.

Materials Needed:

  • Scout Tee pattern – either in an assembled PDF or paper pattern
  • Light to medium light weight fabrics such as cotton, silk, lawn, voile, charmeuse, crepe de chine or wool crepe. Extra fabric needed to match plaids, stripes or one-way design fabrics.
    • You will need between 1 2/3 and 1 7/8 yards depending on your size – see the size chart here for more information
  • Coordinating thread
  • Sewing Machine
  • Fabric Scissors or Rotary Cutter

Quilt Donations for Wildfire Relief Efforts

In response to the wildfires occurring in California, several organizations are collecting quilts to be given to those effected by the wildfires. Eternity Quilt Events is collecting quilts to be donated to those impacted by the Camp Fire in Northern California. Sewing Arts Center in Santa Monica is also collecting quilts that will be donated to those impacted by the Camp Fire as well as those impacted in Southern California by the Woolsey Fire.

We will be collecting quilt donations at this Sunday’s (11/25) sew-in at Quilt in a Day, as well as at our holiday party on 12/2 that will be sent off to help with these relief efforts. Quilts can be dropped off with Kristyn at these two events and if you have any further questions, please email her at [email protected].

More information about the Eternity Quilts Effort can be found here.

quilt show

San Diego Quilt Show Sew-In

We’ve been given the opportunity to hold a sew-in at the San Diego Quilt Show, which is happening from September 20-22 at the San Diego Convention Center.

Show times: Thursday 10am-6pm, Friday 10am-6pm, and Saturday 9am-4pm.

You will need to commit to the days (or half days) that you want to come to the sew in, in order to have your space reserved. Sign ups will be open until September 12th. The entrance fee will be waived for the first six people that commit to sewing each day. A half day option will be available if you only are able to sew for part of the day.

Feel free to bring your own project or to work on blocks for the QuiltCon Charity Quilt project. As part of the sew-in, we’ve been asked to highlight our charity efforts, so we will have information about the charities that we currently support as well as examples of what we’re currently working on for our charity project. We will also be spreading the word about quilting and guilds in general.

Chairs, tables, and power will be provided, but you will need to bring any other supplies that you use to sew (machine, iron, ironing surface, cutting tools, ect.). A SDMQG moderator will always be present in the sewing area, so you will be free to go walk around and see the show as well.

To sign up for the sew-in, or if you have any further questions, email Cohni Corazon at [email protected]

2019 QuiltCon Charity Quilt Challenge

In case you haven’t heard, this upcoming QuiltCon’s Charity Challenge theme is to use small piecing. While the whole quilt does not need to be made up of all small pieced blocks, it should be the main focus. For more information about the challenge, check out the QuiltCon website.

We have planned out the guild’s quilt for this challenge and are raising our own challenge to guild members as well. We are challenging every member to contribute to the overall quilt design by creating one block. You are certainly welcome to contribute as many as you’d like!

For this challenge we are using Kona colors in the following palette:

Blocks for the quilt must finish at 5” or smaller and may use up to two colors from the color palette above. The background will be made up of only the White and Bone colors, while the main parts of the quilt will use the other five colors. Blocks can be created using any method – EPP, traditional piecing, FPP, improv, ect.

Fabric for these blocks will be made available starting at the August meeting, but you may also feel free to use your own fabric if you have these colors available. All blocks will need to be returned to Kristyn no later than the October meeting, so that we have time to assemble the top and get it quilted before the deadline. If you would like to make a block (or to return a completed block), but are not able to make a meeting or sew-in, please email Kristyn and we will try to make arrangements.

More information to be discussed at the upcoming meetings!
