San Diego Modern Quilt Guild Website Update
You can find our website at sdmodernquiltguild.com.
Most of the updating work has been completed. Newsletters, activities and events are now posted. Many thanks to Angela and Janine for all of their work to get the website updated! The Website Committee has been disbanded for now.
Financial Review – Suzanne Coyne, Treasurer
Suzanne gave a review of the quarterly budget. Although the Modern Quilt Guild dues are increasing, our dues will stay the same for 2026. Because the guild is a nonprofit, the cost of the yearly Zoom has been reduced by half. The last page of the Newsletter always has a copy of the budget to show where money is coming in and going out.
Charity – Kristyn Jansen, sdmqgcharity@gmail.com
Meals on Wheels – potholders and placemats need to be to Kristyn no later than the holiday party in December. Instructions for Meals on Wheels can be found HERE.
Moores Cancer Center – Moores is our current trimester charity recipient. Moores serves cancer patients who are going through treatment at UCSD. We support the patients there by providing lap/throw sized quilts (approximately 50”x60” or larger) for them to use during their treatment. Recipients of the quilts will keep their chosen quilt as well. Instructions for the current trimester group charity project can be found HERE.
Opportunity Quilt – We will be using our 2025 QuiltCon Community Outreach quilt as an Opportunity Quilt to raise money for Feeding San Diego. In our charity outreach efforts, we try to reach as many different groups as we are able. While quilt making and donating is one of our primary focuses, not every organization can benefit from the donation of a quilt. So, over the past few years, we have used the quilt we have made for the QuiltCon Community Outreach Challenge as a different way to donate to another local organization. Food banks are generally in greater need around the holidays, but are in much higher demand at this time, so we have chosen to support Feeding San Diego in this effort and 100% of the proceeds will be going to them. The winner will be drawn at the Holiday Party. If you’d like to purchase an opportunity raffle, visit our blog post about the Opportunity Quilt HERE.
Quilts for Ukraine – Melodee Cartin (mdcrkc@aol.com) is collecting quilts to be shipped to folks in Ukraine. There are no size requirements but they would like quilts for boys or men as they already have quite a few for girls. You can bring quilts to the next guild meeting and give them to Melodee.
Gently Hugged – Our contact and point person for this charity is Shelly Hoffman, chas2454@aol.com Gently Hugged provides blankets and quilts for babies in need via social workers and nurses. This organization hands out about 60 care packages a month. Quilt dimensions maximum – 30″ x 45” (a little larger is ok) No religious prints, sports prints, holidays, etc.
2026 QuiltCon Community Outreach Quilt – Elizabeth DeSilva shared the progress on the quilt.

Ask a Quilter – Irons
Today’s topic was irons – what you look for, how to clean them, what kind of water to use, etc. There were so many comments!
What we look for – auto shut off, heavy, large and small irons including mini and travel irons; gets hot fast, shuts off, and has manageable cord or is cordless.
How we clean them – salt (heat the iron, put it into salt); rub with dryer sheet; wipe with cooking oil for 5 minutes with the iron off, then rinse with soapy water; Pam cooking spray; use science!
Water – consensus was that most newer irons don’t need/recommend distilled water. Because our water is hard, one person suggested using filtered water. Another suggestions was to use a spray bottle rather than steam.
Connections – If you use an extension cord, use one that is round rather than flat as it will have higher amperage.
Monthly Raffle
Five lucky people went home with raffle prizes.
Sew & Tell
As always, we had some beautiful quilts and tops shared. Such a talented group!
Rummage Sale
After the meeting we had a rummage sale. Members bought and sold quite a few items bringing happiness to both parties!
