Janine welcomed everyone to our October 12th meeting. We had four visitors who shared where they were from. It’s always great to meet new people who love quilting!

Charity Update –
Kristyn – sdmqgcharity@gmail.com
Moores Cancer Center – the third and final trimester focus for the year. Moores serves cancer patients who are going through treatment at UCSD. We support the patients there by providing lap/throw sized quilts (approximately 50”x60” or larger) for them to use during their treatment. Recipients of the quilts will keep their chosen quilt as well.
For our group quilt, we are making Quarter Log Cabin blocks in a palette of blues, greens, yellows, and whites. Blocks can be made using prints or solids (please keep print colors to the palette) and can be made from your own stash or from a block kit. Blocks should be at least 11″ unfinished and all will be trimmed to a uniform size once they have been turned in. Completed blocks are due back at the November guild meeting (Sunday, November 9th).

If you need a copy of the block directions, please see this link:
QuiltCon Community Outreach Quilt 2026. Our quilt for the upcoming event has been designed by Elizabeth DeSilva and has been co-coordinated by Jen Collins. They handed out blocks at the September meeting. Blocks were due back at the October meeting.
Meals on Wheels – We are continuing our current drive for Meals on Wheels and our collection of potholders and placemats. Collection of items will continue through the November meeting. If you are in need of supplies for this (scrap batting, Insulbright, fabric), please let Kristyn know! If you’re new to this project or need a refresher, the information is below:
Meals on Wheels has four service centers around the county and our donation will be split between the North and Metro Service Centers, as this is where we as a membership are primarily located.
Size: Placemats should be about 12″ x 18″ ( 13″ or 14″ x 19″ also works well)
Potholders should be around 9” square.
Planning for next year- It’s time to start planning for the upcoming year and the charity programming. We hold a yearly planning meeting that is open to any member, which is usually held around the first weekend of November, but can be planned for the time/day that works best for those who are interested.
If you did not participate last year in the meeting and would be interested in joining, please let Kristyn know ands will add you to the list.s This is a very low key meetup, which usually lasts about an hour and we discuss the programming that we currently have and how that is working or not and then discuss any potential changes or additional drives that we would like to support in the upcoming year. Suggestions for charities to support are always welcome!
Special Charity Opportunity – Gently Hugged
Our contact and point person for this charity is Shelly Hoffman, chas2454@aol.com
This effort provides blankets and quilts for babies in need via social workers and nurses. This organization hands out about 60 care packages a month. Dimensions maximum – 45” x 30” (a little larger is ok) No religious prints, sports prints, holidays, etc.
——————–
Supplies: If you need supplies for a charity quilt, please let Kristyn know! Batting as well as fabric for backing and binding are available upon request.
Finished quilt prep: Finally, a reminder/note about finished quilts – all of our quilts are washed before they are donated. If you wish to wash yours before handing it off for donation, please do so with unscented detergent and fabric softener (if you use that).
We also label all donated quilts with our SDMQG label – you can attach that before donation or one will be sewn on if it doesn’t have one. Let Kristyn know if you need a label.
Also on the subject of labeling – please make sure to have your name in some way (painters tape, paper pinned to quilt, labeled on a bag with the quilt inside, etc) on quilts you are donating. We record each donation for both donation tracking purposes and for year end prizes.

Ask A Quilter Question – What are the challenges or tips on cutting fabric?
We had quite a few comments!
- Use a fresh blade
- Use Accuquilt
- Hold the rotary cutter perpendicular to the mat
- Use the ruler not the mat for measuring
- Use the same brand of rulers for a project for accuracy
- Watch for grooves in the mat
- Never iron on top of the cutting mat!
- Use a Stripology ruler
- Have the cutting are at the correct height for you
- Watch for the ruler shifting as you cut
- Put the selvages of the fabric together rather than trusting the fold to be accurate
- Cut with the fold nearest you
- Check that your cutting is straight when cutting multiple strips
- Starch the fabric first for less stretching
- Mark your ruler with tape when cutting multiple cuts of the same size. You don’t have to keep remembering the size!
- Stay present while cutting – re-straighten when necessary
After that lively discussion, we had Sew & Tell – what a collection of beautiful projects!

Please come and join us next month!
