Charity –

An email went out to members on Sept. 10 with information about our charitable work for this trimester.  If you did not receive the email, please contact Kristyn Jansen (sdmqgcharity@gmail.com).

Trimester focus – Moores Cancer Center – Moores serves cancer patients who are going through treatment at UCSD. We support the patients there by providing lap/throw sized quilts (approximately 50”x60” or larger) for them to use during their treatment. Recipients of the quilts will keep their chosen quilt as well.  Block kits for our Moores group quilt quarter log cabin block will be available at the Sept. 28 Charity Sew-In. Please see the Sept. 10th email for block directions for the kit or for making a block from your stash.

Meals on Wheels – Collection of placemats and potholders will continue through the November guild meeting.  If you are in need to supplies, contact Kristyn.

Charity Sew-In – Meet at Quilt in a Day on Sept. 28.  There will be a variety of projects that we will be working on – sewing group quilt blocks into a quilt top and prepping backing/batting for in progress projects will be among the tasks. If you’re interested in joining us, bring your sewing machine and supplies as well as a willingness to help! Tasks may be limited by the amount available as well as the number of people who join in for this, so feel free to bring your own charity sewing to work on during this time.

Charity Planning Committee – If you are interested in helping plan the charity program for next year, please let Kristyn know so she can add you to the list.  The committee usually meets in November.

QuiltCon Community Outreach Quilt 2026 – Our quilt for the upcoming event has been designed by Elizabeth DeSilva and co-coordinated by Jen Collins. Blocks were available at the meeting. Block kits are due back at next month’s October guild meeting.

Melodee Cartin (mdcrkc@aol.com) introduced a new charity project for us – Quilts for Ukraine through Wrap the World With Quilts.  There are no size requirements but they would like quilts for boys or men as they already have quite a few for girls.  You can bring quilts to the charity sew-in or to the next guild meeting.

Gently Hugged – Our contact and point person for this charity is Shelly Hoffman, chas2454@aol.com   Gently Hugged provides blankets and quilts for babies in need via social workers and nurses. This organization hands out about 60 care packages a month. Quilt dimensions maximum – 45” x 30” (a little larger is ok) No religious prints, sports prints, holidays, etc.

Activities

Linda Isley won the raffle for Sharing Your Talents, the focus for this past trimester.  Several events are upcoming, thanks to members for taking the lead.

Octopus Viewing Party – Tuesday, Sept. 23 at Dori Conboy’s house.

Handwork Happy Hour at Tin Leaf – Oct. 19, Nov. 16, both at noon.  Shelly Hoffman is the organizer.

Liberty Fabric Presentation – I-Chun Chen will present

Holiday Party – Dec. 7, 11:30

Gift exchange participants should have received an email with their recipient’s name.  Please let Janine know if you signed up but haven’t received it.

This year’s party will be catered by the Kabob Shop. Tickets will be $15 and members will be receiving an email with information.  Desserts will be potluck – our members know how to bake!

Ask a Quilter – This month’s question was “What is your favorite quilter coat/jacket pattern?” Several named were Laundry Basket Quilts, Hovea Jacket and Tamarack Jacket.  One suggestion was to use an old quilt to make it because old quilts are soft and drape better than new fabric.  One other suggestion was bigger is better!

Sew & Tell –  We are fortunate to have members who share their work.  We saw some lovely quilts and tops!

Following the meeting, Sue Bouchard taught the last class for her Animal Quilt Sampler Sew Along – From A to Z.  It has been a great class!
