Meeting, Meeting Notes

March 2022 Meeting Recap

Our March meeting on Sunday, March 13th was a great one! If you weren’t able to make it, here’s what you missed!

President Quilt

Our 2021 President, Priscilla, was gifted her President Quilt that was made by our members. She was thrilled and it came out beautifully. Thank you to everyone who made blocks, Hadley who assembled the top, Carrie for quilting and Sue for binding this special thank you gift.

Activities

UFO Swap Coming in April!

We are holding our annual UFO (UnFinished Object) swap after the April meeting. Bring your languishing projects that you are ready to pass along to someone else. Those unfinished projects that may be bringing you down are fresh inspiration to someone else! Bring your project(s) in a bag with a label explaining the contents. You do not need to bring something to take something. The goal is an empty exchange table when we are all done!

Wrap-up – 1st Quarter Challenge: Increased Learning

Members who participated in the first quarter challenge shared what they learned! Examples included:

  • Tula Pink’s English Paper Piecing video tutorials
  • Katie Pasquini Masopust’s workshop at Asilomar
  • Peggy Martin’s Foundation Paper Piecing tips
  • David Owens Hastings Quiltcon minimalist design class
  • Visible and textural stitching by Heidi Parkes and Zak Foster

Announced – 2nd Quarter Challenge: Bag Swap!

Our next challenge is a bag swap! Make any bag/pouch of your choice (big, small, zippered, handled) and bring it in a brown bag for a blind swap at our June meeting. If you make one, you will bring one home!

Monthly Member Spotlight

Janine is looking for a few more of our members to feature at future meetings throughout the year. Whether you are a new quilter or an experienced quilter, we all have our story to tell and we want to get to know YOU better! All presentation styles can be accommodated- from free form with show and tell to a powerpoint presentation with pictures and anywhere in between. Please email Janine at the sdmqgboard gmail to sign up!

Our March Member Spotlight was Jen Collins, our Secretary! Jen shared how knitting became quilting and how she started to find her creative voice through creative limitations.

Retreat

The details of our summer retreat at the Vina de Lestonnac Retreat Center were discussed and registration opened after the meeting. Once registration is confirmed, members who will be attending need to provide their deposit payment and the balance is due in May.

Charity

Year-long Special Project: Women’s Resource Center

Our special year-long quilt drive to support the Women’s Resource Center’s emergency shelter is doing great! There are several guild groups working on quilt projects as well as many friend groups. Thank you to everyone who is helping in this effort!

As a reminder, The Women’s Resource Center helps to serve women and children who have been victims of domestic abuse and/or sexual assault. Our goal is to provide quilts for all of the 33+ beds in the shelter. We are asking for twin sized or large throw quilts in the color scheme below so that they will coordinate at the facility. Details of the project have been emailed out to members and can be read in this blog post

Current Charity Drive

For the first trimester of 2022 (January – April) we are supporting the Ronald McDonald House. The group quilt blocks were due back at the March meeting, but if you still have blocks at home be sure to contact Kristyn at the SDMQGcharity gmail to make arrangements to turn them in. Please also let Kristyn know if you are interested in helping finish up one of these group quilts.

Mark Your Calendars! Outdoor Charity Day is Coming!

Similar to events we held last year, we will be meeting at Carrie’s house in Carlsbad on Saturday, May 14th for a special charity day. This is a great time to drop off your completed donations, pick up supplies or grab a quilt kit to finish. Details of the meeting will be provided closer to the day.

If you or your group anticipate needing supplies to complete your WRC project, please let Kristyn know by the April meeting so that she can order any needed supplies in time for the Charity Day in May.

Finally, have a quilt that doesn’t fit with this trimester’s drive? No worries! All of your beautiful and generous guilt donations are always welcome. Any charity questions or requests for supplies can be sent to Kristyn at [email protected]

And keep tagging your charity makes (in-progress or finished objects) with #sdmqgcharity on Instagram so everyone can see your contribution!

Sew and Tell

As usual, our members brought some amazing, beautiful and inspiring projects to share. But we would be remiss if we didn’t take a moment to honor Suzanne and her astounding number of quilts that she completed completely by hand in the last couple of months and donated to Ronald McDonald House. Here are a few standout examples:

Mega Freebee Day

After our meeting, Hadley put out a wide arrangement of fabrics, books, thread and patterns that were a result of a few recent donations to the guild. We are excited about being able to offer this service to our community by helping rehome materials (frequently when a quilter’s family needs to find a home for their loved one’s stash). We first review all donations for our charity program, anything left over is then offered to our members for their own use. Any items not taken by members are now being donated to local school maker’s spaces, The Girl Scouts, Social Justice Sewing Academy and the Navajo Project. We are hoping through this intentional distribution of materials, we are helping keep them in makers’ hands and out of the landfill!
