Meeting Notes

April 2022 Meeting Recap

Our April meeting was held on Sunday, April 10th. If you weren’t able to make it, check out what we covered below.

Special Guest from the San Diego County Fair

Home Made coordinator, Elena

Elena stopped by and provided some detailed information about opportunities at the San Diego County Fair this year to not only exhibit your work, but also judging, volunteer and job opportunities as well. The Home Made exhibit has been renamed and will be relocated to a slightly different area of the fair. Entries of quilts (or other hand made items) are open to any California resident and due by May 9th. All entrants get a ticket and special invitation to the Open House event on June 8th. Any questions can be emailed to sdfairhomemade at gmail dot com. Entry information can be found here and the entry form is here.

Activities

UFO Swap!

We held our annual UFO (UnFinished Object) swap after the April meeting. There was some great stuff exchanged and we are looking forward to seeing any finished projects. Be sure to bring them back to share at a future meeting and/or use the hashtag: #sdmqgorphanlove to share with everyone what you did!

2nd Quarter Challenge: Bag Swap

Our current challenge is a bag swap! Make any bag of your choice (big, small, zippered, handled) and bring it in for a blind swap at our June meeting. If you make one, you will bring one home!

Our President, Nancy will also be leading anyone who is interested through a simple zippered pouch during our regular May sew-in on May 22nd. We will have available zippers and interfacing and we will be sewing up the Noodlehead Open Wide Zippered pouch. A free pattern in three sizes you can access here

Monthly Member Spotlight

Janine is looking for a few more of our members to feature at future meetings throughout the year. Whether you are a new quilter or an experienced quilter, we all have our story to tell and we want to get to know YOU better! All presentation styles can be accommodated- from free form with show and tell to a powerpoint presentation with pictures and anywhere in between. Please email Janine at the sdmqgboard gmail to sign up!

Retreat

Registration for our summer retreat at the Vina de Lestonnac Retreat Center has concluded and all participants have been notified for initial payments. Final payments for weekend retreaters are due no later than May 14th. There are also a couple more day spots available for Friday or Saturday. If you are interested, please email the sdmqgboard gmail to find out what is available. First come, first serve, so do not delay!

Charity

Outdoor Charity Day!

Similar to events we held last year, we will be meeting at Carrie’s house in Carlsbad on Saturday, May 14th from 10-11am for a special charity day. This is a great time to drop off your completed donations, pick up supplies or grab a quilt kit to finish. And if you have a charity project you offered to complete for the guild, this is your motivation to get it done and turn it in! Address of the meet-up will be emailed closer to the day.

If you or your group anticipate needing supplies to complete your WRC project or any other charity project, please let Kristyn know ASAP so that she can order any needed supplies in time for the Charity Day in May. Requests cannot be guaranteed for pickup for the Charity Day at this point, but all efforts will be made.

Year-long Special Project: Women’s Resource Center

Our special year-long quilt drive to support the Women’s Resource Center’s emergency shelter is doing great! There are several guild groups working on quilt projects as well as many friend groups. Thank you to everyone who is helping in this effort! We have officially received 7 quilts towards our donation and have seen several others in progress.

As a reminder, The Women’s Resource Center helps to serve women and children who have been victims of domestic abuse and/or sexual assault. Our goal is to provide quilts for all of the 33+ beds in the shelter. We are asking for twin sized or large throw quilts in the color scheme below so that they will coordinate at the facility. Details of the project have been emailed out to members and can be read in this blog post

Potholders?

Still have a hankering to sew up some potholders? We have more insulbright as a result of a donation, so let Kristyn know if you would like some. You can access the tutorial Sue put together here. Potholder donations will be held and submitted as part of the end of the year Community Resource Center’s Holiday Baskets program.

Opportunity Quilt

Kristyn shared the guild’s completed Quiltcon Community Outreach Challenge Quilt. Thanks again to all who contributed to our firework spectacular of a quilt. We will be using this quilt to raise money as a summer opportunity quilt. More details to come!

Current Charity Drive

Our first trimester of 2022 (January – April) supporting the Ronald McDonald House is wrapping up! There are still a few group quilt blocks out there, so please return them to Kristyn ASAP! If you weren’t able to sew them up, no worries! But please send them back so we can start to finish up the group tops. Please also let Kristyn know if you are interested in helping finish up one of these group quilts. You can contact her by emailing the SDMQGcharity gmail.

Coming Charity Drive

For our second trimester of 2022 (May – August), we will be supporting the Just in Time for Foster Youth’s My First Home Program assisting young adults who are aging out of the foster care system and establishing their first apartments. We will be providing throw quilts and bed quilts to the program.

Ideas for End of the Year Charity Drive

For the last trimester of 2022 (September – December), we have been supporting the Riverside Chemo Lounge. While our contact is willing to still drive them out to the Chemo Lounge, she has recently moved so we are looking into opportunities to support a San Diego-based chemo center. If you have any suggestions or idea of a center who might be interested in receiving our donations, please let Kristyn know so she can contact them!

Finally, have a quilt that doesn’t fit with this trimester’s drive? No worries! All of your beautiful and generous guilt donations are always welcome. Any charity questions or requests for supplies can be sent to Kristyn at [email protected]

And keep tagging your charity makes (in-progress or finished objects) with #sdmqgcharity on Instagram so everyone can see your contribution!
