Meeting Notes

February Meeting Recap

Our first in-person meeting of 2022 was held on Sunday, February 13th. If you weren’t able to make it, here’s what you missed!

We will continue to offer a Zoom viewing option for the foreseeable future as an option for those who can’t make it to our in-person meetings. Watch for each meeting’s Zoom link in our monthly newsletter emails.

2022 Membership

Our 2022 registration drive is wrapping up. If you are planning to renew your San Diego Modern Quilt Guild membership, please complete the registration form and pay your dues as soon as possible by clicking here

Dues will continue to be $50 for the year. Those dues go in-part to the Modern Quilt Guild and get you access to all of the membership resources including discounted admission to QuiltCon classes and lectures as well as webinars, patterns and other quilting resources. The other portion of your dues remain with us. We use those funds to pay for programming, activities, raffle prizes, charity supplies and more!

Hadley also took a few minutes to discuss the difference between the Modern Quilt Guild and the San Diego Modern Quilt Guild and the most efficient way to get your questions answered. You are always welcome to send your questions to us, but questions about QuiltCon or your MQG account may be answered more quickly by reaching out directly to the MQG.

Activities

1st Quarter Challenge: Increased Learning

Our first quarter challenge is going strong! As a reminder, between now and March, challenge yourself to learn or try something new. It can be anything that adds to your quilting journey that you can share with the group:

  • Something you learned in class
  • New color patterns
  • Read an article or view an instructional video
  • Challenge yourself to try something you have been avoiding

Whether you find something on your own or while at Quiltcon, bring your new found knowledge/project and share it in March. Participants are eligible for prizes.

Monthly Member Spotlight

We would like to feature YOU at a future meeting! Whether you are a new quilter or an experienced quilter, we all have our story to tell. Share your quilting journey so we can get to know you better. Anyone who indicated they were willing to participate should have received an email from Janine asking for their availability so that she can start to fill out the schedule for the rest of the year. All presentation styles can be accommodated- from free form with show and tell to a powerpoint presentation with pictures and anywhere in between.

Our February Member Spotlight was Janine, our new Vice President of Activities! Janine shared her creative history and some of her amazing art pieces made using a technique called Stitching Painted Fabric, including:

Retreat

Planning has started for our summer retreat at the Vina de Lestonnac Retreat Center. Our retreat weekend will be held June 2-5, 2022. This year in addition to full weekend retreaters, we will be able to offer day retreat spots on both Friday and Saturday. Members are welcome to register for one or both day spots. Registration will happen in March and will be open for a week. When registration closes, spots will be filled on a lottery basis. Details will be emailed to members at the beginning of March. We will ask for a $100 deposit from weekend retreaters once spots have been confirmed.

Charity

Year-long Special Project: Women’s Resource Center

Our special year-long quilt drive to support the Women’s Resource Center’s emergency shelter had a strong start! Several members shared off their finished and near-finished quilt projects.

As a reminder, The Women’s Resource Center helps to serve women and children who have been victims of domestic abuse and/or sexual assault. Our goal is to provide quilts for all of the 33 beds in the shelter. We are asking for twin sized or large throw quilts in the color scheme below so that they will coordinate at the facility.

Details of the project have been emailed out to members and can be read in this blog post. The guild-organized groups have been formed and we love seeing the friend and sewing circle groups that have formed to support this effort. Thank you to everyone who is planning to help!

Current Charity Drive

For the first trimester of 2022 (January – April) we are supporting the Ronald McDonald House. The group quilt blocks are due back at the March meeting or please contact Kristyn at the SDMQGcharity gmail to make other arrangements to turn in your blocks.

Donation Update

Kristyn dropped off another quilt donation in February of 27 quilts to Just in Time for Foster Youth! Thank you again to everyone who donated quilts or participated in our group project.

Finally, have a quilt that doesn’t fit with this trimester’s drive? No worries! All of your beautiful and generous guilt donations are always welcome. Any charity questions or requests for supplies can be sent to Kristyn at [email protected]

And keep tagging your charity makes (in-progress or finished objects) with #sdmqgcharity on Instagram so everyone can see your contribution!

Sew and Tell

We saw some amazing quilts from our members! A couple inspiring highlights are included below.

Dori shared her stash quilt using the Minky binding tutorial Nancy shared at the January meeting:

Daina shared the Fiesta quilt that she and her friendship quilting circle made.

And Linda I. shared the Quiltcon Mini Swap project she made for her swap partner.

Finally, Kristyn shared the second completed group quilt that the guild made for the Riverside Chemo Lounge drive in 2020.
