Meeting Notes

July 2025 Meeting Recap

We had five visitors this month, including two from out of state – one from Charleston, South Carolina and one from Madison, Wisconsin.  How fun to share our meeting with fellow Modern Guild members!

Announcements

Worldly Quilting Activities –

  • San Diego County Fair – We had one second place winner and two third place winners!  Congratulations, Jen Collins and Susan Kephart!
  • Julian Women’s Club with Eleanor Burns event – August 13, 2025
  • Visions Veranda Sale – August 2, 2025 with preview night August 1.
  • Grand Central Quilt N Stitch – Marsha Derse fabric available

Elections – Elections are coming up for the following positions that are timing out:  President, VP of Activities, and VP of Operations.  Nominations will be made in September with voting occurring in October.  Janine shared that each position requires approximately two hours each month outside of guild and board meetings.  Anyone interested is invited to let her know.

Website Committee – The Website Committee has been formed and started meeting  twice monthly in June.  The committee is working on updating the website and creating a manual for keeping it updated, with the goal of updating it monthly.  To accomplish this, we may need a dedicated person to maintain the updates.  The position will not be a board position but will work with the board for information.

Charity

Donation Update: Kristyn made donations the end of June to the Ronald McDonald House (47 quilts) and to Meals on Wheels (130 placemats, 26 potholders).  The next donations will go out toward the end of the year.

We are halfway through the second trimester focus for Just In Time’s My First Home Project (May – August).  Just In Time serves 18-26 year old transition age youth who are aging out of the foster care system by providing them with a variety of supports and programs so that they can become self-sufficient and thrive. We donate to their My First Home project which helps to provide all the things one needs when setting up their first home. For this drive, we will be accepting throw and bed sized quilts (minimum 55” x 60”).

For our group quilt, we will be making Split Square Blocks. Please see email sent from sdmqgcharity@gmail.com on May 23rd for full instructions. You are welcome to use your own stash to make a block. Blocks for this quilt will be due back at the August guild meeting (August 10th).

QuiltCon Community Quilt Update – Jen Collins shared that Elizabeth De Silva has design ideas for the quilt and will be sharing those with us in the future.

Activities –

Our quarterly challenge is Shine your light and share your talents!  There are lots of ways you can share yours and support our guild.  Some ideas are:

  • Organize a membership quilt show
  • Host a workshop
  • Coordinate a handwork happy hour
  • Arrange a fall field trip
  • Host an “Octopus” viewing party
  • Take over cat bed collection and distribution

Upcoming Events:

  • July 13 – meeting – dues are now prorated!
  • July 27 – Sew-in
  • August 10 Meeting and Scrap Swap – scraps and yardage welcome as are UFO’s you no longer plan to finish.

Ask A Quilter Question – This month’s question was about fabric colors bleeding and what to do about it.  Many suggestions were made:

  • Use Color Catchers
  • Wash like colors together
  • Prewash your fabric
  • Use Retain or Synthrapol
  • Use Dawn dishwashing soap or Shout
  • Do not dry before trying to get bleeding out
  • Wash quilts on cold and transfer to dryer immediately

It was agreed red and white quilts can be the hardest.

Sew & Tell – Once again, we saw a lovely array of quilts and bags.  Thank you to all of you who shared your creations!
