SXSW: Sewn by Southwest Mini Quilt Swap

The Denver Metro Modern Quilt Guild has launched a modern mini quilt swap in partnership with the San Diego Modern Quilt Guild and the Austin Modern Quilt Guild. This multi-guild collaboration is a fun way to connect with fellow modern quilters, explore new techniques, and create inspiring mini quilts to share.

Timeline

  • December: complete the online individual sign-up form by December 15, 2025, to participate. Sign ups are closed.
  • January: Your mini quilt partner will be announced.
  • February & March: Design and sew your modern mini quilt. This is your time to experiment, sketch, select fabrics, and create something uniquely you.
    • Your finished quilt should measure between 12″ x 12″ and 24″ x 24″.
  • April: Submit your mini quilt to Sue Bouchard at the April 12, 2026 meeting. Sue Bouchard will mail two packages – one to each partner guild on or before April 20, 2026.

Design Prompt: Transparency

Transparency in quilts refers to the technique of creating the illusion of see-through layers by using overlapping colors snd fabrics. This effect can add depth and dimension to quilt designs, making them appear more luminous and dynamic.

Partner Matching

Participants will be matched 1:1 based on self-professed skill level to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable swap experience.

  • Beginner: New to quilting, learning foundational quilting skills.
  • Advanced beginner: Familiar with basic techniques and ready to expand skills.
  • Intermediate: Has a fair amount of experience, has tried several techniques and is confident attempting new ones.
  • Expert: Has quite a bit of quilting experience, there aren’t a lot of techniques they haven’t tried, could confidently teach others how to piece and quilt.
