Low Waste, Semi-Improv, Fat Quarter Friendly Zig-Zag Quilt
Join Susan Kephart in her Low Waste, Semi-Improv, Fat Quarter Friendly Zig-Zag Quilt workshop. The quilt is based on Sujata Shah’s “Rail Fence” quilt from the book Cultural Fusion Quilts, but Susan has adapted the process to use fat quarters instead of yardage. The book is not necessary for the workshop, but Susan recommends it in general!
Susan will provide a printed pattern and some special supplies for the workshop participants.
Fabric needed:
- Throw (48” x 64”): 12 Fat Quarters – 6 light and 6 dark.
- Twin (64” x80”): 20 Fat Quarters- 10 light and 10 dark.
- Fat quarters must have at least 18” x 21” usable. Please press them and double-check the measurements before class.
Solids, near-solids (crossweaves, blenders, tone-on tone), or small-scale prints will all work for this quilt. Avoid large-scale prints, or any fabric that’s too linear (stripes, plaid) or obviously directional.
Supplies needed:
- Sewing machine with 1/4 inch foot
- Light colored thread
- Rotary Cutter
- 24” acrylic ruler
- 6” or larger square ruler
- Large cutting mat (bigger than a FQ)
- Pins or clips for piecing
- Scissors or thread snips
- Seam ripper
Nice to have but not necessary:
- Mini iron and pressing mat
- Washi or painter’s tape
- A bit of a fingernail for finger-pressing. (i.e., don’t do your nails right before class)
During the workshop Susan will talk about paper-bag randomization, net piecing, pressing strategy, spinning seams, and offer some suggestions for what to do when things go wrong. All skill levels welcome! Susan says the class will be suitable for beginners, but she’s hoping to add value for more advanced quilters as well.
