June 2025 Meeting Recap

Summary of June 8, 2025 Meeting

We had one visitor this Sunday.  Great to have so many of our members present at the meeting!

Announcements

Retreat – Janine shared the results so far of the Retreat Survey.  Of the forty-five responses, the majority of people want to continue having a retreat.  To the thirty-five members who responded to the question on importance of the cost, 82% said it was some consideration but they wanted the retreat.  The question about having a shorter stay for a lower cost had mixed reviews.  Janine will check with the retreat center to determine if both shorter and same length options may be possible.

Overwhelmingly, members want to have day sewing on the Friday and Saturday of the retreat.  As far as the distance to a retreat center, under 2 hours was most important.  Results on whether to have onsite meals or bring in food were mixed.  Results on whether to stay onsite or at a hotel were pretty even.

Looking ahead to 2026, based on the proposed cost, over half of the responders plan to attend 3-4 days while over a quarter plan on day sewing.  Following a discussion about possible retreat sites, it was concluded that Vina de Lestonnac Retreat Center remains the best place for our retreat.  Janine will sign the contract for next year to reserve our time slot.

Worldly Quilting Activities

  • The San Diego Fair begins June 11. Several of our members have quilts in the fair.
  • Metro Modern Quilt Guild has a guild demo Wednesday, June 18
  • Fiber Fest will be at Liberty Station the weekend of June 14-15
  • San Diego People of Color Quilt Show in Chula Vista is on June 21
  • Julian Quilt Show runs from June 28 – July 6

Website Committee – The newly formed website committee will be meeting twice a month beginning June 9.  It currently has 5-6 members.  If you are interested in participating, let Janine know.

Activities – This month’s focus has been Sewcialize.  We discussed ways we had learned from others.  Ideas included attending retreats, going on quilt runs with friends, and going to guild meetings.  We also had a UFO Swap at the end of the meeting.

Charity

We are starting our second trimester drive which focuses on Just In Time for Foster Youth (JIT) and their My First Home Project. JIT is an organization in San Diego County that supports 18-26 year olds who have ever spent any time in the foster care system. They provide numerous services to these individuals to help them break the cycle of foster care, become self-sufficient, and to build a secure future.

We support their My First Home Project, which helps to provide all of the essential items that one needs for their first home. For this drive, we are accepting throw and bed sized quilts.

For our group quilt, we will be making Split Square Blocks. Kits were available at the June meeting and you are also welcome to use your own stash to make a block. Blocks for this quilt will be due back at the August guild meeting (August 10th). For more information, see the email from Kristyn on May 23.

Meals on Wheels placemats and Ronald McDonald quilts will be delivered this month and at the end of the year.

QuiltCon quilt –  Making a QuiltCon quilt is optional.  The Modern Quilt Guild chooses the colors and theme for each year.  This year’s theme is Medallion.  Elizabeth DeSilva and Jen Collins volunteered to head it up for us this year.

Ask a Quilter a Question -This month’s question was “How do you choose your colors for quilting?”  It was a lively discussion with many answers – colors that jump out at you, CT Essential Color Card pack, kits, Quilter’s Field Guide to Color by Rachel Hauser, whatever differed from what was just used, whichever color scrap bin is full, depends on purpose of the quilt, paint chips, color wheel, and more.  One member shared an app called Quilty Solid that will choose the colors for you.  A variety of colors are preferred for backgrounds – white, black, grey, blue, red, green.

Sew and Tell – As always, we saw some beautiful quilts and bags at the meeting.  We have such talented members!

Sue’s Animal Quilt Sampler Sew Along –  From A to Z

Designed by Sue Bouchard

Finished size: 58″ x 68″

This quilt features new ways to combine our fabrics into 6″, 9″ and 12″ blocks.  We will take traditional blocks to the next level by creating a sense of motion in their design.  Each one highlights a different species from our animal kingdom from Alligators to Zebras.

This month’s blocks are the Alligator, the Indian Palm Squirrel, the Meerkat, the Nightingale, and the Warthog.
