Meeting Notes

March 2025 Meeting Recap

We had several visitors and new members on Sunday.  Great to have so many of our members present at the meeting!

Announcements

Membership – Everyone needs to have paid dues by March 10, 2025 or be dropped from the Modern Quilt Guild roster.  Our San Diego Modern Quilt Guild dues include the MQG dues.  Make sure you’ve paid yours!

Retreat – There are three spaces available for weekenders for the May 29 – June 1 retreat at Vina de Lestonnac retreat center in Temecula.  There are also spaces for day sewists on Friday and Saturday.  Contact the board at [email protected] for more information.

Worldly Quilting Activities – March is National Quilting Month.  Saturday, March 15 is National Quilting Day.

T-shirt Store –  San Diego Modern Quilt Guild T-shirts will be available for purchase throughout the year from Big Frog.

Activities –

Jelly Roll Race – This month’s activity was a jelly roll race.  We only had one team plan on participating so they won!  Congratulations to both ladies!

Rummage Sale –  In April, we will have a rummage sale where members can sell fabric, quilting and sewing items.  All items bust be labeled with the owner’s name and the price.  At the end of the sale, anything left goes home with the owner. All transactions will take place person to person.

Charity –

This trimester (January-April) we are collecting quilts for Ronald McDonald House.  Quilts of all sizes are needed as families with children of all ages stay at Ronald McDonald House.

We are continuing to make pot holders and place mats for Meals on Wheels which will be distributed mid-year and at the end of the year.

The current charity group blocks were due back to Kristyn at this meeting. Please contact her at [email protected] to make arrangements you were not at the meeting (or forgot to bring them).

Ask a Quilter a Question

This month’s question was how often do you oil and clean your machine.  Answers varied from every time I sew to never, especially regarding oiling.  Some machine manufacturers say not to oil it yourself.  Instead, get the machine serviced.  Others say to oil it often.  Knowing your own machine’s needs is important!

Sew and Tell

As always, we saw some beautiful quilts at the meeting.  We have such talented members!

Meadow Star Quilt from Jen C.
Two by Four style quilt from Melodee

Sue’s Animal Quilt Sampler Sew Along –  From A to Z

Designed by Sue Bouchard – Finished size: 58″ x 68″

This quilt features new ways to combine our fabrics into 6″, 9″ and 12″ blocks.

We will take traditional blocks to the next level by creating a sense of motion in their design.

Each one highlights a different species from our animal kingdom from Alligators to Zebras.

This month we learned to make the Dug the Dog, the Tortoise, the Llama and the Ostrich blocks.  If you haven’t yet signed up and purchased your pattern, it is not too late! Contact the board for more information.
