Meeting Notes

August 2022 Meeting Recap

Our August meeting was held on Sunday, August 14th. It may have been our longest meeting to-date! If you weren’t able to make it, here’s what we covered:

Elections!!

We spent a good bit of time at the beginning of the meeting discussing the coming elections. We have three board members who are terming out and their positions (VP of Operations, Treasurer and Secretary) will need to be filled for 2023. However, all board positions are available if someone is interested in any of the positions. Our two returning board members (President and VP of Activities) are willing to either continue their positions or shift if there is a desire by other members to fill their current positions.

We need your help to keep the guild active and move it forward with new ideas. Serving on the board is a lot of fun and doesn’t have to take a lot of time. If you are interested in ANY of the positions, have any questions or would like to discuss your possible involvement in the 2023 board, please reach out to any of our board members directly or email the sdmqgboard gmail.

Here are some dates to remember:

  • September: Taking nominations
  • October: Election (actual voting)
  • November: Soft transition/training period
  • December: Holiday Party (no meeting)

Activities

3rd Quarter Challenge: Summer!

Our current challenge is to make something inspired by summer. You can make anything you would like from a mini quilt to a bag. Show off your creation and inspiration at the September meeting for a chance to win prizes!

Social Justice Sewing Academy with Sara Trail: at our September meeting (Sept 11th) at Quilt in a Day

We are excited to be hosting Sara Trail for a trunk show about the Social Justice Sewing Academy. Please visit the SJSA’s website for information about their project as well as how you can get involved!

Monthly Member Spotlight

Treasurer and Charity Coordinator, Kristyn Jansen shared with us her life as a maker and how she became a quilter. We have all seen a lot of the work Kristyn has done as part of the guild’s charity program, but it was such a treat to see more of her personal work!

Next month, we will be featuring Meli Mathis and we are currently scheduling members for presentations in 2023.

Charity

Cat Beds!

We had a mountain of completed cat beds at the meeting! Keep them coming and your fiber trash out of the landfill! We have donated fabric available to make the outside of the beds if you would like some. When you are done, turn them in to Hadley for donation.

Current Charity Drive

We wound up our second trimester drive of 2022 (May – August) supporting the Just in Time for Foster Youth’s My First Home Program. This program assists young adults who are aging out of the foster care system and establishing their first apartments. We are asking for throw quilts and bed quilts to donate to the program. If you still have a quilt you would like to donate to JIT, we will continue to accept them throughout the year.

Next Charity Drive

For the last trimester of the year, we will be supporting Moore’s Cancer Center with donations of lap quilts. More information will be provided next month.

Holiday Basket Program Change

We announced at the meeting that the Community Resource Center’s Holiday Basket program will not be accepting quilts this year. They are switching to a gift card system so families can buy the items they need directly from retailers. They are however welcoming donations of lap quilts to their senior holiday bags program.

If you have a quilt you were saving for the Holiday Baskets drive, we are happy to accept them for one of the other organizations we support.

QuiltCon Community Outreach Challenge Project: Color Shift

Quilt block packets were handed out for our contribution to the 2023 Quiltcon Community Outreach Challenge. We would love for as many members as possible to participate in this group collaboration. If you weren’t able to pick up a kit already, please contact Kristyn at the sdmqgcharity gmail to make arrangements – we still have kits available for members to sew up to contribute to this project.

Keep tagging your charity makes (in-progress or finished objects) with #sdmqgcharity on Instagram so everyone can see your contribution!

Sew and Tell

August’s Sew and Tell was a great one! Some spectacular examples of modern quilting include:

Shelly’s Anna Maria Horner Heart quilt made with Tula Pink Scraps:

Angela’s scrappy boat quilt:

And Dori’s “Black and White” double wedding ring quilt:
